Profile  

Chilarai College was established in the year 1973 on 26th January. The Assamese Department of the College was also been established in the same date along with other departments of the College. Assamese as a compulsory subject was offered both at under graduate i.e., B. A. and Higher Secondary level. The College came under deficit grants in aid system in the year 1987. Before this year the Assamese department was run by some dedicated persons like Chandra Bhusan Sarma (M.A.), Ms. Chapala Roy, Tarani Kanta Roy (M.A.), Ms. Swapnali Saikia (M.A.), Dwipendra Kr. Adhikary (M.A.) and others. The department with three full time teachers along with other part time teachers ventured to offer major course in Assamese in the year 1988. Since then Major Courses in Assamese have been running on a regular basis in the College. In the year 1992 one of the full time teachers was awarded Ph. D. degree from Gauhati University. He has also made note-worthy publications. The other two teachers also have published their various articles, poem, short story etc. in various journals and periodicals of this region. All the teachers of the department are closely associated with several National and regional academic bodies such as - Indian Folklore Congress, Asom Sahitya Sabha, Rajbangsi Sahitya Sabha, North Eastern Foundation for Social Sciences and Research etc. Two of the teachers are doing M.R.P. research work under UGC financial grants.
The department is well equipped with a separate department chamber, department library with 161 books and a few journals and other useful reference periodicals. A separate Major class room with basic needful articles.
