Chilarai College was established in 1973 and at that time the department of Economics also opened for H. S. and B. A. class. The College came under deficit grant in aid system in the year 1987. At the very beginning there was no major course in B. A. classes. Major course for U. G. class was offered from 1st August 1992. At that time there was only two full time lecturers in the department. Now the department has three full time Senior lecturers and two part time lecturers. The Head of the department completed M. Phil. from NEHU. Another Senior lecturer is doing Ph. D. works. Two part time lecturers are also doing M. Phil. The Head of the department is also the Co-ordinator of G. U. P. G. C. S., Chilarai College Study centre. The lecturers of the department attended various State & National level Seminars. Some lecturers of the department are also closely related to some associations like North-Eastern Economic Association, A. C. T. A., Women Forum, etc. One of the lecturers is the in-charge of the Career Counseling department of Chilarai College and another one is the Nodal teacher of Environmental Studies.

Current Session

The students who get 50% marks in Economics in H. S. Exam. are eligible to apply to the Head of the Dept. for offering major course.

Moreover the students who are coming from Science & Commerce stream and overall 50% marks obtained in H. S. Exam. are also eligible to offer major course in Economics.

The department produced 16 nos. of students having Major in Economics completed B. A. Among them six students completed M. A. from different universities, two of them got first class in M. A. They are working as lecturer in Chilarai College & nearby college. Most of the ex-students are getting job in different Govt., Semi-Govt. & Private Organizations.

The lecturers of the department are very active and enthusiastic. They are associated with various academic and social activities in their localities. The lecturers have published various articles regarding recent economic phenomenon in different magazines.
